- MS TCP/IP need not be a memory hog.
- -----------------------------------
-
- I am sick and tired of everyone whinging (a good Aussie expression combining
- the worst of whining and cringing) about the MS-TCP/IP stack being a memory
- hog!
-
- I have it and NETBEUI, running on WFWG 3.11, on my machine with over 600K of
- RAM left. There are simply a few tricks that you have to to in order for that
- to work.
-
- Allow me to list them in order:
-
- 1. Upgrade to DOS 6.2
- 2. Install the MS TCP/IP stack
- 3. Add (or modify) the following to your config.sys
-
- devicehigh=emm386.exe RAM m9 i=b000-b7ff i=e000-efff
-
- Make sure that you are also running HIMEM.SYS, and have DOS=high, umb in
- your config.sys file. Some machines may be able to do without the m9,
- while others may require a different m parameter. Use HELP emm386.exe
- at your DOS prompt to find out what options you have.
-
- 4. Run MEMMAKER in custom mode. Make sure your autoexec.bat does not, for
- the purposes of optimisation, start any programs or menus such as
- Windows. That wastes a lot of time. You can put them back later.
-
- - Select YES to specifying which drivers are to be included in the
- optimisation.
- - include the mono region (this uses the b000-b7ff above). You must
- also add, to your system.ini [enhanced] section the following:
-
- device=monoumb.386
-
- - If using WFWG 3.11 DON'T bother with optimising for Windows. It is
- for V3.1 (I'm not sure if WFWG 3.1 or plain vanilla 3.1). It that
- situation it may be worth trying. I haven't. You can try the Scan
- Aggressively option. It does not always work.
-
- 5. Do NOT, when specifying which drivers are to be loaded high, include any
- of the TCP/IP TSRs. These take care of themselves, partially in the UMB
- region, and partially in expanded memory - hence the need for include RAM
- in the emm386 line. All other TSR's can be loaded high, include
- IFSHELP.SYS Do include the net start line in your autoexec.bat as one to
- optimised.
-
- 6. If you need a mouse in DOS, and don't want to load it in your DOS window,
- consider investing the the Ver 9 drivers. They also will load high.
- I have found that the lower versions will not load high if expanded
- memory is present.
-
- I think you should find a vast improvement in memory space on most machines.
- I also have room for doskey and a few other TSRs to be loaded high. I do not
- have a CDROM installed, nor anything else extra. I will worry about those
- later, when I install NT.
-
- The following is a copy of what I get when I type MEM /C at my DOS prompt.

- Hmmm. I've been using WinVN and Chameleon for about a year without any
- GPFs. For that matter, the NewtNews doesn't cause me GPFs either. It's just
- horribly slow. You might want to contact one of the authors, Sam Rushing,
- at rushing@titan.ksc.nasa.gov. When I reported a problem with displaying
- return e-mail addresses he had it fixed within a day.

- I'm looking for the latest and greatest Winsock.dll for PC-NFS 5.0.
- Any suggestions? I've got a Winsock, dated 3/2/93, but I'm having
- trouble running Mosaic, and I suspect winsock.dll may be at fault.
- Anybody out there have any similar problems?

- Thanks,

- Not true.. They had a very working demo on their site that was good until Aug.
- 30th '94, but took it down since it was overloading their site.. So to
- re-phrase could someone put this DEMO up of Cica??
- Chris
-
- I talked to a Netmanage sales rep yesterday. In the course of the
- conversation, I asked about the demo they had up on their ftp server.
-
- Their response was that the copy on their server was not intended to be
- distributed in that way. They took it down, and they don't intend to
- put in back up. Given that, it would probably be inappropriate to put
- it up on cica, because it is indeed commericial software. (You might
- check the copyright notice on the version that was distributed for a
- time.) This is my version of what she said; for a more definative
- version, talk to Netmanage.
-
- Another way to get a version of the Chameleon software is to buy the
- new book "The Windows Internet Tour Guide" by Michael Fraase,
- published by Ventana Press. It costs around $25, and contains a
- legal, usable copy of Chameleon. (I don't have the book yet, so I
- don't know exactly what it does and doesn't include.)

- I second this. In fact, I use PFE as a general replacement for notepad. One
- of its nicest features (for me) is that it automatically recognizes UNIX-style
- documents which often are sent with the .txt extension, but are not handled
- at all well by notepad.
